The Legend of Grumpy's

What is Grumpy's?

Grumpy’s is the newest one of a kind restaurant in Starkville, Mississippi. Delicious food is prepared for lunch and dinner by our friendly staff. Grumpy’s has the biggest television in Starkville with our 9 foot by 12 foot jumbotron LED TV(the “ Grumpytron”). Grumpy’s makes sure it broadcasts all of the big games through DIRECTV's college and pro sports packages. Other special events include movies.

Grumpy’s has other daily food and drink specials as well as events. Each weekday Grumpy’s serves a “blue plate lunch” and in the evening a special meal such as casserole dishes. Just good ole’ home cooking. Even Mother would be jealous! But she would be happy you’re eating great food! There's too much going on at Grumpy’s to tell you everything on this website. So come on down and see for yourself.

Why did you open Grumpy's?

Grumpy’s traces its restaurant roots all the way back to the “Blue Goose Café” opened in 1931 by John and Florence Raines with the help of their children. The Blue Goose was the place to be if you were a MSU student - much like Grumpy’s is now.

After that there was “The Diner,” a trolley car brought from San Francisco by Vernon and Doris Chesteen and located across the street from where Grumpy’s is today. The Diner also was the “hot spot” and sold so many hot dogs on the weekends, it did not have enough storage space for the buns!

Then along came “The Derby” and the La Plaza Restaurants operated by the Chesteens. The places were so busy on weekends that many times the assistance of Police Department was needed to keep customers away!

Our commitment to you (along with our delicious recipes) comes from the tradition of these great restaurants.
